Last day 2011. Linda, me and three kids. The plan was to join an other group climbing the highest mountain in the country (on their way back, of course).

Suddenly it was too cold, too foggy, too windy, subsequently too dark, too far, we were too frozen and too exhausted.

St. Lucia

Although I like very much the Scandinavian tradition of the crown with candles, we celebrate the feast of Saint Lucia according to traditions of our country of origin. Anyway, I imagine my daughers in white, carrying the candles on their heads - it will come one day, for sure!

In our tradition, St. Lucia alias "Lucka" symbolises light and purity. She comes into the house after sunset dressed in white, with her face dusted with flour, a wooden spoon in one hand and a bell in the other. She goes through the house and checks whether it is tidy. Mess can make her very angry!

While the children played upstairs with their dad and I went to the grocery store, there was Lucka in the house. She rang the bell and went straight to the children's room to controll if everything is clean (fortunately, we cleaned the room today, such a coincidence!) The children could see her from the stairs and dad made a picture of her so I can post it.

It seems like Lucka was satisfied - she left a gift in the room:

There is a tradition for today's feast of St. Barbara. We picked up some apple twigs and put them in a vase. Well, actually you should do that with cherry twigs but we could not find any in our neighbourhood and as it was cold and rainy outside, we settled with apple.

Now we have to wait for the first blossom. The number of day after St. Barbara's day on which the first blossom will be noticed means the number of most happy month in 2012.

Writing to Ježíšek

Our Christmas gift-bringer is not Santa, Père Noël, Weihnachtsmann or any other of the laughing fat men in red. No, friends. We wait every year for our Ježíšek, a mysterious spirit-like child who brings things we wish, then rings a little bell and disappears in all modesty to watch our joy covertly. Every year we try to spot him, we feel that we saw a little corner of his cloak three years ago but we really do not know how he exactly looks like. Even Wikipedia is not sure about it. There is something about Ježíšek - to us, Ježíšek and all the Christmas magic coming with him is something what we wish to preserve.

So, every Advent, we write letters to him. Some of us draw their wishes, others write long letters about all the important events in previous year.

After finishing the letters, we hang them on a string outside from the window and wait for him to arrive and take them.

It may take several days. Soon, we are sure, the girls will excitedly tell us that the letters are gone. Then we will know: he could find us even so far avay! Hallelujah!

Two and half years ago, I inherited my mum's two thick books full of recipes. The first one is called "Salty" and overflows with recipes for salty goodness. The other, the "Sweet", consists tens, rather hundreds of recipes for various desserts. Just before the Advent is coming, I suppose it is the time to open my Sweet book again. Well, the first moments are overwhelming. The book still keeps the aroma of my mom's kitchen, of the times when I was her restless little helper.

I have to skip the newer recipes which are not spectacular at all: just printed e-mails or recipes from webpages. The interesting part starts from about 1996. There is a recipe on the reverse side of a telefax. Somebody asks there about possibility to transport a machine (4.800 kg) from Hamburg to Zimbabwe. On the other side my mom wrote by hand a recipe for "the best Tiramisu". Some of the recipes are written by my mom's hand, some are from her friends and collegues, some are just carbon paper copies with a hand written note like "must be eaten warm" or "11.2.1975".

The oldest one is written by my grandmother. Look at it: "we spread coconut flour on a greaseproof paper..."

There is also one short notice written by me. Seven years old, I was on the phone in our hallway and my grandma dictated me a recipe for my mum...

Oh goodness. So warm. I feel like my mom is back again. Welcome, Advent!
